Innovative Streets: Norwalk’s First Complete Streets Demonstration
August 7, 2024

Earlier this summer, FHI Studio had the pleasure of conducting Norwalk’s first-ever Complete Streets demonstration project. This initiative is part of the broader Norwalk Complete Streets Policy and Design Manual, aimed at creating a network of streets that are safe and accessible for all users. The demonstration project received enthusiastic feedback from the community and volunteers, highlighting its potential to transform urban spaces.

The demonstration, captured in the above drone image, focused on several key enhancements. On the left side of the photo, a blue curb extension repurposed an underutilized right turn lane and bus layover space into a vibrant parklet. This new area will soon feature tables and chairs, providing a welcoming space for residents to relax and enjoy the cityscape.

On the right side, the multicolored curb extension illustrates how expanding the sidewalk can improve accessibility. This newly designed pathway aims to address current gaps in the city’s pedestrian infrastructure, making it easier for everyone to navigate the streets safely.

Additionally, a new crosswalk at the bottom of the image improves pedestrian access, while refreshed stop bars and the top crosswalk enhance safety and visibility. The introduction of a center median breaks up the crosswalk, slowing down traffic and raising pedestrian visibility, ensuring safer street crossings.

The success of this demonstration project is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the community and FHI Studio. It provides a tangible preview of the transformative impact that the Norwalk Complete Streets Policy and Design Manual will have on the city. By integrating innovative street designs and prioritizing pedestrian and cyclist safety, Norwalk is taking significant strides towards creating a more inclusive and dynamic urban environment.
