Bringing New Life to Hartford’s MLK Apartments
June 24, 2024

We are thrilled to share that the long-awaited redevelopment of the Martin Luther King Apartments in Hartford is officially underway!

Partnering with Crosskey Architects, FHI Studio has played a pivotal role in this $64 million redevelopment project, which is set to transform the Sheldon/Charter Oak neighborhood.

Our contribution focused on designing a thoughtful site plan that enhances community living. The centerpiece of our design is a central green featuring a gazebo and playscape, creating a vibrant hub for residents to gather and enjoy outdoor activities. A pedestrian-style boulevard ensures safe passage throughout the complex, complemented by wide concrete walks and raised crosswalks to enhance accessibility and promote traffic calming.

In addition to these amenities, our plan includes multiple refuse areas, strategically placed site lighting for safety and ambiance, and extensive tree plantings to promote a green environment. These elements are designed not only to meet the functional needs of the community but also to foster a sense of belonging and pride among residents.

The redevelopment project, scheduled to begin with demolition in June and expected to complete in 18 months, will offer 155 garden-style and townhouse apartments. Three-quarters of these units will be affordable for working households, addressing the critical need for housing in Hartford. The project also includes 38 units qualifying for federal Section 8 housing subsidies, ensuring equitable access for all.

We are honored to be part of this transformative initiative that not only revitalizes housing infrastructure but also revitalizes a community, offering new hope and opportunity to the residents of Martin Luther King Apartments.
