With a 35-year history of strong female leadership, FHI Studio is pleased to announce the promotion of another strong woman leader - our new President, Carla Tillery!
During her 30-year career at FHI Studio, Carla has helped shape our company as one of the pioneers of our transportation engineering practice. She also served as a manager and senior administrator over this time and made countless other contributions to our corporate evolution. In her prior position as Chief Operating Officer, Carla demonstrated her knowledge and command of all aspects of our business. In addition to her tangible contributions and impressive career growth, Carla gives FHI Studio something even more special - her commitment to our success, vibrant personality, and energy. Carla is known for her strength, compassion, effective communication, mentorship, confidence, positivity, integrity, and sense of humor.
"I cannot think of a more talented and competent leader to take over as President and lead FHI Studio into the future. Carla has been by my side for as long as I can remember. I've seen her evolve from a thoughtful and quiet analyst into the bold leader she is today. In a way, we grew up together, like siblings - taking risks, trying new things, and cheering each other on along the way. I will continue to support Carla and FHI Studio in my ongoing role as Chief Executive Officer, where I will focus on strategy and long-term corporate development, organizational health, and generational sustainability. I am honored to continue to work side by side with Carla, and I am proud of her success."
- Susan VanBenschoten, CEO
As President, Carla will be responsible for all aspects of FHI Studio's operations, management, and performance. She will lead our organization's operations strategy and procedures for fostering alignment among all areas of the business, oversee the financial operations to ensure economic health, and deliver results to our clients and the communities where we work.
"It is an honor and a privilege to stand upon the solid foundation established by the founder of FHI Studio, Ruth Fitzgerald, and my predecessor, Susan VanBenschoten. As a woman of color, I am proud to join the ranks of these powerful women, and I am excited to lead this world-class firm.
I came to FHI Studio nearly 30 years ago as a young engineer, and this firm has given me the opportunity to grow and develop professionally and personally. Working so closely with Susan has been and continues to be such an incredible journey of learning, sharing, and growing! I want you to know that I share and truly understand the work ethic, core values, passion, and commitment to the work we do. I am very grateful for the confidence that my colleagues have in me, and it is reciprocated.
So, I say, I'm ready! As a leader, I am prepared to embrace and overcome each challenge. I am ready to rejoice with each triumph that produces a strong dynamic team and creates new opportunities, innovative and strategic approaches, and thoughtful and intentional design solutions for ALL the communities we serve. FHI Studio is ready!"
- Carla Tillery, President
Beyond FHI Studio, Carla is active in the transportation industry as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Hartford, Director-at-Large for the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) CT Chapter, and an active member of the Women's Transportation Seminar (WTS). She received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from North Carolina A&T State University and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Connecticut.
